The lodge
Andesite from the quarry at Pichi Traful to the window line, cypress board above, cypress shingle on the roof, and a lower floor cut into the slope so the back of it is underground.
Dates
- 1946 – the road is pushed through to Puerto Manzano.
- 1947 – the road house opens with six beds and a stove.
- 1952 – the gallery is added along the west side.
- 1961 – three rooms go in under the rafters.
- 1977 – the patrol boat moves to the new slip and the lower floor empties.
- 1978 – the building is sold and becomes a hotel.
- 2003 – the roof is re-shingled.
- 2014 – the lower floor is lined, lit and fitted out.
What we changed
The boiler, in 2009, from oil to gas. The nine bathrooms, between 2010 and 2016, one a winter. The kitchen floor, which was boards over joists and is now a slab, because a kitchen floor that moves is a kitchen floor that spills. The lower floor, in 2014: lined, wired, lit, heated, and a second door cut at the top of the stair.
What we did not
The stone. The gallery posts, which are the originals and are out of plumb by up to forty millimetres, measured. The hall, which is the best room here and is never going to be divided. The six steps, which are andesite, worn in the middle, and will not be levelled.
The staff
Nine of us. Two on the desk, three in the kitchen, two on the rooms, two on the lower floor door and bar. Six live in the village and come up by car; three live here through the winter. Everybody who works the door has worked here at least two seasons before being put on it.
Winter
Route 231 is cleared and stays open. Chains are required between June and September when the signs say so, and the signs are usually right. If you arrive without them we will put you in touch with somebody in the village, and we will not pretend you did not need them.
