The Lake Road

Route 231 runs from Villa La Angostura to the Chilean border at Cardenal Samoré. We are at kilometre 62, on the lake side.

From the door

  • Shore path – behind the woodshed, 900 metres, twelve minutes, ends at a stone beach. Steep for the last fifty metres.
  • Correntoso outlet – two kilometres east along the verge. The river that leaves the lake there is said to be among the shortest in the world, which may or may not be true and is pleasant to stand beside either way.
  • Village centre – seven kilometres west. The local bus passes at twenty past the hour until eight in the evening.
  • Arrayanes peninsula gate – four kilometres south of the village. The walk to the end of the peninsula is twelve kilometres each way; most people walk one way and take the boat back.

Seasons

December to March is warm and dry and busy, with the lake at about 16 degrees, which is colder than it looks. June to September is cold, often clear, and the ski hill at Bayo runs when there is snow, which is not every year. April, May, October and November are quiet, cheap and the best walking.

Getting here

Bariloche airport is eighty kilometres and about ninety minutes. The bus from Bariloche terminal runs roughly hourly and takes two hours including the stops. From Chile, the Samoré pass is two hours west, and the border closes in heavy snow without much notice.

Wind

It blows from the west most afternoons from October to February, hard enough to take a hat off the gallery table. The lake gets rough quickly. If you are going out in anything small, go in the morning.
