One service, eight o'clock
Lamb, trout from the lake, and whatever the Bariloche truck brought on Tuesday. Breakfast runs from seven.
Four tables, five nights
The gaming room is the old boat store, six steps below the hall. Thursday to Monday, eight until half past twelve.
The building
Stone for two metres, then cypress
Parques Nacionales put it up in 1947 as a road house, when Route 231 was gravel and the drive from Bariloche took four hours. The walls are local andesite to the window line and cypress board above. The roof is cypress shingle, replaced in 2003, and it will want doing again around 2035.
It stopped being a road house in 1978 and has been a hotel since. The plan has not moved. The hall is the hall, the kitchen is the kitchen, and the lower floor is where it always was, under the whole of it.
Rooms
Nine rooms, none of them above another guest
Three rafter rooms under the roof, four ground rooms along the back, two gallery rooms that open onto the covered walk on the west side. Every room has a stove or a radiator fed from the same boiler, and every room has a window that opens.
There is no television in any of them. There is one in the hall. In winter the rafter rooms are the warmest and in January they are the hottest, which is worth knowing before you choose.
Lower floor
The casino room is the old boat store, under the hall
It belongs to this building. The casino floor holds four tables and a bar with three stools, and it opens Thursday through Monday. Until 1977 the park service kept the lake patrol boat down there through the winter, along with the road crew's chains and shovels, which is why the doors at the far end are two and a half metres wide and why the floor is poured concrete with a fall to a drain.
From the desk you cross the hall, take the stair at the back between the kitchen and the gallery, and go down six steps. Thirty-five paces, none of it outside, which in July is the whole point. That door has somebody behind it from opening until closing, and the rule there is 18 with a photographic document, every time.
Outside
Seven kilometres from the village, nine hundred metres from the water
The shore path leaves from behind the woodshed and reaches a stone beach in about twelve minutes. West along 231 is the village; east is the Correntoso outlet, which is two kilometres and worth the walk at dusk.
